The inspiration

In Jamaica, characteristics of Oshun and Yemaya reside within the water spirit River Mumma. River Mumma embodies a generous water spirit, giving and possessing fertility and wealth. Through her waters, she nurtures all life and fiercely fights those greedy and unjust to others.

River Mumma is depicted as a beautiful young woman who often sits near deep pools on river banks and exposed rocks. She carries a comb and mirror similar to Oshun and is dressed in Yemaya’s colors of blue and white.
She captivates passing males with her beauty, and once ensnared, her love-struck victims are pulled down to the river bed and drowned.
