The inspiration

Ma'at was a deity and principle revered by the ancient Egyptians. She was considered the daughter of Ra, birthed when he rose from the waters of chaos to create the world and was a patron of truth, justice, balance, and order. Ma'at is often depicted holding an Ankh, the symbol of life, in each hand and wearing an ostrich feather on her head.

Ma’at’s principles, the 42 laws of Ma’at, govern order, harmony, nature, and human affairs and are perceived by Egyptians as the foundation of their society. They believed that after death, one's soul's heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at. If lighter, the soul would journey to eternal life, but if heavier, it would be devoured by Ammut and cast into darkness. The weight of the heart was determined by how well the deceased upheld Ma'at's laws in their earthly life.
