My Backstory
Ibeji, Yuroba, for twins (‘born two’), are high-ranking among the Yoruba people and are considered to possess metaphysical powers that allow them to transcend both the human and spirit worlds.
Ibeji represents the idea of duality as a human limitation in perceiving the whole. According to author and ritualist Luisah Teish, everything has a "negative" and a "positive" aspect in our interaction with natural forces, such as birth/death, left/right, inspiration/action, soul/body, and cold/heat.
The twin children were destined to die, only to return and repeat their tortuous cycle. They share one indivisible soul, capable of bringing death to those who provoke them, wealth to their parents, and granting children to barren women.
In Trinidad, they reemerge as Da Lua and Da Logee; in Vodoun, Haiti, as La Marassa; and in Santeria, Cuba, as Ibeyi.
